Just because you book a vacation that involves a cruise doesn’t mean you won’t be able to take advantage of cycling opportunities. In fact some of the most interesting biking opportunities available can be realized by booking your vacation with adventure travel companies. All ships and boats have to end up in port at some time or another; and these are your golden opportunities to enjoy hiking, scuba diving and even biking through villages and tropical settings.
Everybody On The Bus
Once your ship docks you will most likely be shepherded to a number of chosen locations. Snorkelers and scuba divers will be bused to a beach; bikers and sightseers to a different location in town. Cycling will probably take place in groups and it is well advised that you stay with your group; particularly if you’re not familiar with your surroundings. Nobody wants to get lost in the middle of nowhere and miss the boat to the next destination. Wait a second… Let me rethink that. Lost in the middle of a tropical paradise—could be worse. Could be Detroit.
This Isn’t Your Everyday Mountain Biking
Remember as you go biking through the towns and tropical scenery that you’re not biking in and amongst the cool Colorado Rockies. You are in the tropics now. It’s humid; it’s hot; and it may well be buggy in certain areas. Staying hydrated is of the utmost importance as is dressing appropriately. Sunscreen is an absolute must as well as a sun cap that will breathe, thereby allowing air flow to your heated brain, while still keeping the sun off. Appropriate clothing goes all the way down to your sneakers, don’t forget. If your feet are uncomfortable chances are the rest of you is miserable as well.
The cruise that I took years ago was probably the best vacation of my entire existence. Sometimes I think it’s a tossup between the cruise and the week I spent on a tropical island at a luxury resort. Once again, there was ample opportunity for tours and excursions daily. Or I could simply sit at the pool bar (in the pool) and sip banana daiquiris until it was time to gamble in the on-site casino.
